Who in Congress Will Lead the Fight Against Corruption? LET'S FIND OUT!

BY Frank Kirkwood

It has now been three years since the disastrous Citizens United Supreme Court decision allowing unlimited campaign spending by corporations and unions. The result? More nasty attack ads, more secretly-funded campaigns, more power for the big spenders to bully and intimidate "our" representatives with threats of well-funded attacks.

And the results for We the People? We continue to lose our voice in Congress. We have lost more of our trust in our representatives' ability to represent us.

While a few members of Congress are fighting this decision, most are silent. They seem to have accepted Citizens United as something they can live with and use to their personal advantage.

We the People will need to end this silence if we are going to make any real progress in protecting our right to self-governance and in re- establishing trust between our representatives and us.

We need to know now if our representatives are part of the corruption problem or part of the solution. That's why we are beginning a campaign to do just that.

We are contacting our representatives in Washington asking them to post, on their web site, their plans to fix the Citizens United decision.

We call it The 535 Campaign because we are going to establish a direct line of communication between the 535 members of Congress (435 in the House of Representatives plus 100 in the Senate) and the citizens they are supposed to be representing.

Here's how the 535 Campaign works: We each ask our member of the House and our two Senators to post, on their web site, their plans to fix Citizens United. Then, we get together with other people in our own Congressional District and our State and organize to get more local people to ask our representatives to post a plan.

If our representatives do post a plan, we look it over and discuss if it is a plan that really will fix Citizens United. If they won't post a plan, then we know that they are part of the problem and we will find new representatives, representatives who will be part of the solution.

When we ask our representatives, "Will you please post, on your web site, your plans to fix Citizens United?" We won't need an eight- page letter from them to know their answer - we just need to look at their web site.

If your representatives don't have a plan to fix Citizens United posted on their web site, ask them to get that taken care of. Maybe they are silent because they think the People don't know enough about money in politics to care, let alone to hold them accountable. We do know, we do care, and we are going to hold them accountable!

Big Apple Coffee Party (BACP)

BACP shared their Don't Do Koch Campaign with Coffee Party USA and the entire network. This campaign is simple...print out a flyer of Koch Brothers products with suggested alternates and hand them out at your local supermarket. Shoppers are happy to keep their dollars from supporting the takeover of our country by the billionaire brothers.

Lehigh Valley Coffee Party

Lehigh Valley Coffee Party started broadcasting a local television show in January 2013. Hats off to Robert Trotner for his BIG PUSH in keeping this venture going.

Owens Valley Coffee Party

Was recently featured on a Town Hall radio show with Coffee Party co-founders, Annabel Park and Eric Byler. Owens Valley Coffee Party has been meeting weekly for three years and includes a local tea party member. This is true CP. (a play on PC...we'd like to see us all become a little more CP!)

Membership Invitation

Voting Rights 2013: Governor McDonnell Surprises Many by Signing Voter ID Law

By Eric Byler

I recently wrote that "Rebranding the Republican party" and voter suppression are incompatible. Last year, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) seemed to agree. But this week he changed his mind about that to the surprise of many, including me.

In 2012, McDonnell was hounded by members of his party to sign a bill restricting the right to vote in a crucial election year. He did, but he also issued an executive order to protect citizens' right to vote by allowing other forms of identification, such as a utility bill, to be accepted. An estimated 870,000 Virginians do not have, and may not be able to afford the time and expense to acquire, a government-issued ID. McDonnell also ordered voter registration cards, which were also accepted at polling places in 2012, sent to every registered voter.

Republican lawmakers cried foul, and when the 2012 election produced zero cases of voter impersonation (success), but, a Barack Obama victory in the commonwealth (failure?), they passed a new bill to do away with the Governor's voter-protection measures.

Many expected McDonnell to veto the bill in order to uphold his authority and his legacy as governor, and, to position himself as a mainstream candidate, viable for higher office. Unfortunately, McDonnell has backed down, and on the last day he could have done so, signed the more restrictive voter ID bill into law. MORE
